For Father’s Day 2018: Visit The Philippines we decided to wrap up three occasions together. First and foremost, Father’s Day. Then my sister’s birthday. And lastly, our Dad’s birthday in July. You see, my Dad married a Filipina and moved over to the Philippines several years ago. In order for us to visit, it’s a long flight across the Pacific Ocean. As you can imagine, that’s cost prohibitive for middle-class adults that we are.
Father’s Day 2018: Visit The Philippines
My sister and I didn’t initially plan the visit for her 40th birthday. In fact, it was supposed to be World Cup 2018 hosted by Russia. Through a strange set of events, we discussed and thought it would be best to visit Dad while we can. I’m not a father myself, but I can easily imagine that having my children wanting to visit and be around me would give me all the feels. That’s a ton of love. Or at least that’s the happiness I saw dance in his eyes when we announced our intentions via Skype.
Invariably at some point in shared conversations, Dad and Charrina tend to talk and I’m the odd-man out, literally.
I recognize the father-daughter bond is different from father-son therefore I don’t upset whatsoever. Besides, they’ve literally behaved like this for 4 decades – it’s not going to change. Also, they talk more often than Dad and I. It’s via text, email, etc. With her birthday and Father’s Day being within a week of each other, I’m not surprised the conversation centered around catching up.
Father’s Day celebrations around our house were low-key, even when Mom was alive. For the most part, it didn’t take much for my Dad to be content and happy. He was loved, and surrounded by the family he created. To be honest, I’d be happy too.
About 6 years ago, I was co-best man with my uncle for Dad and Luz’s wedding. I had the best experience getting to know my 4 step-sisters, Luz and that side of the family. Charrina has not, so that’s another reason for Father’s Day 2018: Visit The Philippines is special. She finally meets the side of the family that loves her dearly without so much as meeting her.
I’m excited about this year’s Father’s Day as you can imagine. Do you connect with your Dad? Are you gonna celebrate Father’s Day? I hope you do!
Be good like you should, and if you can’t be good, be good at what you do!
