I don’t have the definitive guide on How To Maximize Your Staycation, but having several of them in the past couple of years … I do have my experience. With the 3-day holiday weekend that has come and gone, I’m sure some of y’all will utter the phrase, “Man, I need a vacation from my vacation”. The following is my tips on having a fun, yet fulfilling staycation.
How To Maximize Your Staycation
Take All Your Vacation Time Earned – I’ve been at the same company now for 15 years so as you can imagine I’ve earned (accrued) quite a bit of time. But that doesn’t mean I leave any of it on the table! No, sir. I work hard for that, so you bet I’ll play just as hard. True, I could roll over 40-hours but … why? I don’t want to seem morbid, but what happens if you get hurt on the job? Hurt outside of the job? Or even worse? You’ve earned it, USE IT or lose it.
Home Remodeling – This one is a bit tricky. You see, I’ve been utilizing the poor-man’s remodeling plan. Save enough money for a project e.g. the pantry, then buy the materials, order it, or otherwise stage it, and of course secure the tools needed for the job. How To Maximize Your Staycation is being able to leverage that time away from the job from minute one!
Free Attractions Near You – This tip is assuming you’re taking a staycation rather than a vacation because money is tight. That’s not necessarily true. It’s a good idea to be informed of the activities and/or attractions near you that are free. How To Maximize Your Staycation is having working information of the activities you usually don’t get to during the week because of xyz. Get out there! Have a blast. You might even learn something.
Me-TV Unplugged – Avoid logging into work email to stay alert about the latest and greatest. Trust me when I say: You are replaceable! As much as you think you are not … if you quit today, the company would find another “you” in a heartbeat. So truly stay unplugged. Some writers suggest to unplug completely from social media altogether. If you have room mate, family, friends in the same household, then that’s great advice. But if you’re a bachelor, that my room mate must work while I play, perhaps unplugging completely isn’t the best.
Plan Something Fun – So for this staycation (and previous ones) I plan to do something fun to balance out my home remodeling. I’ll be headed outta town for a long weekend with my GF, so that’s How To Maximize Your Staycation without dropping a ton of cash. Many writers suggest staying in a nearby hotel just to not be in your own bed, and home night after night. My rebuttal is that I love my home that I’ve built. I agree that you’ve gotta do something fun. Even as simple as Movie Night or Game Night!
Sleep In / Nap – Turn off the alarm. Let your body wake when it’s done recharging like your phone. There are plenty of published studies that Americans do not get enough sleep. Naps are underrated if you ask me! I love them nowadays. Not so much when I was a child, but the power of 90-minute nap is incredible. It’s one full sleep cycle, and you’ll be more productive than ever.
I’m hoping some, or all of these tips will maximize your upcoming staycation!
Be good like you should and if you can’t be good, be good at what you do.
