On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect. Since Veteran’s Day is this Saturday, most likely observed on Friday, the 10th … be sure to thank a veteran today! While I’ve never served a day in our nation’s military, I certainly do appreciate their efforts. They stood on the fence for us, and did what needed to be done while they were there.
Thank A Veteran Today – Veteran’s Day 2017
My father served in the Navy during the Vietnam War so I do have some insight into the military life. Thankfully, he let me decide whether I wanted to enlist or not. My high school best friend, Chris, served in the Navy as well as his father. So anytime I encounter a proud veteran wearing a baseball cap or T-shirt, I thank them for their service. To me it’s not much, but it’s the little gestures like that make a big difference. Especially when they smile and shake my hand. Their efforts allow me to continue what I do on a daily basis under the blanket of freedom they have provided me.
Some of my friends go beyond that – thank a veteran today – which I wish I could do more. They help by volunteering at veteran’s hospitals, working with non-profit organization that assist disabled veterans, etc.
I do want to emphasis the difference between Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day. Memorial Day is the day we memorialize those soldiers who died. Veteran’s Day is a day we celebrate those would served and are alive – so thank a veteran today. I hope the next time you encounter a veteran on the streets or when you’re out and about, I hope you thank them for their service. Or at least from scowling at them if you have anti-military sentiments. It was their service to the country that allows you to have that opinion of them. Ironic, I think.
At any rate, be good like you should and if you can’t be good, be good at what you do.
