Beat the Heat – Seattle Summer 2017

Beat The Heat
Beat The Heat

August 22, 2017 By //  by Carlos Bayne

The summer of 2017 in Seattle has been a scorcher! If memory serves me, we had 100 days of no measurable rain. So we had to find ways to beat the heat! There are obvious ways, and then of course, creative ways to cool off. We’ll quickly go over the more obvious ways, then on to the fun ones!

Captain Obvious Ideas:

Drink Water – Good old fashion water consumption is the best way to beat the heat. Your body uses that water to cool off like the water in your vehicle’s radiator. And you should drink plenty of it!
Air Conditioning – In your vehicle usually has air conditioning as a standard feature. And some homes, in the Pacific Northwest have it installed. I had a heat pump installed in my newly purchased home which will provide cold and hot air. Based on my experience at Costco, the portable air conditioning units (window installed too) and fans were the first to be sold out.

Be In The Water – Wanna beat the heat? Hit the beach! Go to the lake, river, pond, or any body of water. Please remember water safety first though. Life jackets, water wings, and many other products are available to protect you and your loved ones. Floating The River – I did this for an afternoon, and had an amazing time. Plus towing behind my float was a cooler filled with beers that I shared with my friends.

Aiight, those are the obvious ways, but let’s be honest. There must be more creative and fun ways to cool off. Here are some of mine!

Beat The Heat

Cooling Towel – Wonderful, creative minds have developed cooling “towels” for an unique way to beat the heat. I have several; an American flag, 12th Man / Seahawks, and plain blue ones.

Otter Pops – It’s just a psychological way to make you think you’re cooling off. Any frozen treat will do though!

Kiddy Pool Ice Bath – Filling up a child-size, inflatable pool with ice, and sitting your foldable chair at the edge only to have your feet immersed in the melted ice could cool you off.

Roof Deck Beers – Having beer doesn’t actually cool you off, but it’s a great to beat the heat with friends, especially when there’s an overhead misting system!

Ice Cold – On occasion, I would dunk my T-shirt into melted ice inside of a cooler and put it on! A grip of shock due to the temperature difference, but it was refreshing!

Lights, Camera, Action! – Watch a movie in an air-conditioned theater.

Spray Bottle – Walk around all day with a spray bottle mister with fan!

Regardless of how you choose to beat the heat, please be safe in all that you do, Spaceship Earth and Seattle. As always, be good like you should, and if you can’t be good, be good at what you do!
