Gratuity-Here’s A Tip!

You are here: Home / After Hours / Gratuity-Here’s A Tip!

March 23, 2016 By //  by Carlos Bayne

Last week I mentioned I would elaborate on gratuity, or lack thereof.

It seems to be most professional services have an expectation of a gratuity or tip at the end of the event for service above and beyond (e.g. DJ)

For the most part, my past clients understand this unwritten expectation either by societal rules or want to express their gratitude. When I’ve been given a gratuity, it was followed with the Gratuity = Thank Youwords of kindness such as “That was awesome, DJ Los!” or “Wow, exceeded our expectations. Thank you, I wish it was more”, as they shake my hand and pass me a gratuity of some sort.

Then there’s the few that didn’t tip or give a gratuity of any kind. I’m not offended, really.

The price set for the gig was compensation enough, and I usually know why I’m not gonna see more than that. And honestly, as an entertainer, your prices should reflect your time and skill as the compensation needed, and the tip is a nice gesture.

Ever since being a DJ, I’m more cognizant of tipping service staff for a job well done. Again, I don’t robotically issue tips based on a societal expectation that everyone receives a gratuity. If you do, then that’s an easy way to be hurt, and a recipe for disappointment if you were counting on that money.

That makes me wonder, if couples, clients, etc. don’t tip at an event because they simply didn’t know or if it was intentional?

Here’s a tip: if in doubt, dish it out. They’ll appreciate it regardless! It’s the thought that counts, right? For me, receiving a tip is recognition of a job well done, and reassures me what I’m continuously ask myself – did I “kill it” or did I fell short of awesome?

Thoughts? Lemme know!

Until next time, be good like you should, and if you can’t be good – be good at what you do!
