The fast approaching holiday weekend of Memorial Day is close at hand. Most Americans have time-honored traditions of camping trips, vacations to exotic countries.
One particular Memorial Day Weekend has been the most memorable – it was making lumpia with my little sister, Charrina.
You see, this is all started with my entrepreneur skills applied to wanting to help people at Costco Travel. One of my co-workers approached me regarding Filipino cooking. Apparently, Franco had been craving lumpia, a Filipino deep fried egg roll that’s mainly filled with meat. He heard my sister can really rock that dish. I’m no slouch in the kitchen regarding Filipino food, but all things being equal my sister is better.
I, then, approached my sister who also worked in the Costco Travel office. She was willing to make lumpia Franco. But I asked her what her cost for supplies were and how long did the process take because that’s the entrepreneur in me.
After discussing it at length, we calculated that we should charge $20 for 24 lumpia which would include delivery to the office and cooking instructions. To gauge interest, I started networking the people that I thought would love lumpia, or have had it already and would love to pay for some.

Well, it was a little too successful, according to our orders. We only had the 3-day weekend to complete them as we said the delivery date would be Tuesday after Memorial Day.
If memory serves me, the amount of orders was 17 with a total of 400 plus lumpia! We realized almost too late that the two of us wouldn’t be able to complete these orders even if we worked through the nights and days.
So we asked our friend, Cindy, to help us out. She was delighted to help as she’s always wanted to learn how to cook Filipino food. The entire weekend was spent in our Issaquah apartment as we converted it to a full-blown restaurant kitchen.
As the last hours of Monday came to a close, we were finishing the last order. Then we worked out the details of transportation and delivery as we didn’t think that through thoroughly from the minute “go”.
Delivery day was upon us, as it was Tuesday! Our “customers” were thrilled with their lumpia. Many of them reported back to me that they cooked them up right away that night to enjoy. Some of our “customers” wanted to extend the culinary treat by only eating a few at a time per day.
To this day, that Memorial Day Weekend was the most memorable because it brought together our family by cooking our beloved mother’s tradition food.
What’s your most memorable Memorial Day Weekend memory? Tell us about it!
Until next time, be good like you should and if you can’t be good, be good at what you do!
