I remember my first CD purchase. I’m not sure why not my first music purchase, but definitely my first CD. I drove to the nearest mall to me; the Alderwood Mall. F.Y.E. (For Your Entertainment) was one of the two music stores at that time.
I favored this one for my wishful thinking shopping. Most of y’all call this window shopping. Regardl
ess, I was seeking out retail therapy this time! I saved enough money to buy one CD. Hell, I thought I had the last Willy Wonka Golden Ticket to the ye ole Chocolate Factory.
I told myself to pick carefully as I only had money for one CD so if it sucked I would regret it forever because this is my first. After hours of painstakingly searching, I had decided on my purchase.
The Best of the Doobie Brothers

Why? Because I’ve already heard 90% of the songs on the CD on the radio station, 95.7 KJR, while working on the family vehicles with my Dad.
- China Grove
- Long Train Runnin’
- Takin’ To The Streets
- Listen To The Music
- Black Water
- Rockin’ Down The Highway
- Jesus Is Just Alright
- It Keeps You Runnin’
- South City Midnight Lady
- Take Me In Your Arms
- Without You
The man at the counter was it his late 20’s or early 30’s. He was curious why I placed that CD on the counter. He asked if I even knew those song as they were “before my time”. I proudly answered that I rocked them with my Dad while turning wrenches, so yeah, I “heard” them.
I hurried back to my Dad’s Thunderbird. I couldn’t wait for home to open it so I busted into it like it was a Christmas morning gift. Once the tunes started, a smile etched itself across myself the entire ride home.
Do you remember your first music purchase? Was it on vinyl, 8-track, reel-to-reel, cassette tape, CD or other? If not, do you remember your favorite album as a kid? My questions don’t stop there either.
With the gamut of methods to consume music, what do you prefer?
- Do you download your music only?
- Do you find the torrent instead?
- Do you only stream music via a website (e.g. iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Pandora, and indefinitely growing list but each day)
Except Groove Shark, of course.

Cassette tapes were my thing. I think it was Stryper or something like that.
