Pokemon GO, Geocache Instead: Thankfully the shelf life of internet worldwide sensations is about two weeks, a month at best. Speaking of month, it’s been a month since Pokemon GO has been unleashed on the world. Er, shall I say released? Pokemon GO has fallen off the radar of most of the people I’ve been asking lately.
So all y’all should Pokemon GO, Geocache instead
Lemme back up a bit, but recognizing and giving praise. Pokemon GO accomplished what geocaching wanted to do: get America off their couches, and outdoors. I couldn’t stop smiling knowing that Xbox’s, Playstation’s, and Wii’s were being abandoned for walking around the ‘hood to find and catch Pokemon on the loose! With still rampant obesity in America, I was thankful fitness was a by-product of the latest craze. Pokemon Go geocache!
That being said, this isn’t the first attempt to get everyone out and about searching for items with a GPS enabled phone application. I’m talking about geocaching! First played in 2000, and touted as the world’s largest treasure hunting community with an official app.
However I didn’t know anything about it until a few years ago. I was musing out loud at a friends house on the 4th that I would love to participate in a GPS based scavenger hunt. Kinda Amazing Race meets Where On Earth is Carmen San Diego. My good friend, Sidney Gruenich née Nettleton, piped up with that it existed already – that it was called geocaching.
I was all over it!

It was a great idea for family day on Sunday’s with Dad and my little sister. I must admit the first couple attempts had disastrous results. But I was determined to #keepdigging to ensure an awesome time tromping around the woods and city while trying to locate trinkets.
Sound familiar, Pokemon hunters?
I mined geocaching message boards to come to the conclusion that I needed to buy and download the official Geocaching® app. The cost was ridiculous for an application but well worth the price paid to bring enjoyment to my family on our Sunday’s!
We found our first cache, got addicted, and would race around to all the available caches until we dwere tired, hungry, and not thinking clearly. So much fun! A sense pride would swell within all of us as we located a new cache. My parents fostered a team mentality. We reveled in our victory since everyone would contribute to the win.
However, my Dad has since moved to the Philippines, and my sister and I have prioritized other tasks above geocache hunting. My bro, Jesse, loves to quip and I quote him #teamworkmakesthedreamwork
Let’s be honest, Pokemon hunting is easier, probably more fun, but solidarity. I prefer to the clue based, GPS enabled, with the distinct possibility not finding the cache, geocaching over #PokemonGO any day. Pokemon Go geocache!
It’s an opportunity to test my hunting skills with the hints provided and deductive reasoning powers.
Again, I’m not on the sideline drinking haterade for Pokemon GO. I’m estactic that my fellow Americans are becoming active once again. What I’m hoping for though, once the shininess of the game wears off that America will transition over to Geocaching.
So I challenge you!! Try Geocaching once you’re done leveling up on Pokemon GO. I have several questions for ya:
- Are you willing to try geocaching? By yourself or with a team?
- Have you been geocaching already?
- If so, which do you prefer more – Pokemon Go or Geocaching?
- What’s more difficult? Catching Pokemon or finding caches?
Please comment below with your answers as I’m super curious to read.
Until next week, be good like you should, and if you can’t be good, be good at what you do!
